A Big Tree ca. 1857

"Galen Clark first came upon a grove of some 200 giant sequoias in 1857 in what is now the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park. He named it Mariposa Grove and dedicated the rest of his life to its preservation. This tree is one of the oldest living trees in the grove, estimated at 2,700 years old. The tallest is approximately 290 feet high and the largest measures approximately 40 feet in diameter. In total volume, the giant sequoia trees are the largest living things on earth."
