Born in the Netherlands in 1883 was one of the leader of De Stijl an art movement searching for harmony and equilibrium by getting rid of all unneccessary elements in a painting. Their most famous painter was Piet Mondrian. The thing I find most interesting is that in around 1920, Doesburg introduced an extra element to his paintings: the diagonal (which for a De Stijl purist should have only contained square and lines) . It seems that Mondrian considered this a heresy and left De Stijl (probably slamming the door).
