Illustrations of China and its people

These photos come from a book by Scottish traveller John Thomson (1837-1921) who was the first European to take and publish photos of China and its inhabitants. I chose only some photos but the four  volume set is available online here.

John Thomson, Illustrations of China and its people. A series of two hundred photographs, with letterpress descriptive of the places and people represented, London, S. Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1873-74. Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University
